Coffee and Chocolate are a Match Made in Paradise

Coffee and chocolate are a perfect pair. Both are indulgent, comforting, and can add a little pep to your step from the energizing caffeine they contain. Beyond these benefits, the brews and beans we love share agricultural roots, processing methods, and even naturally occurring chemical compounds that make them perfect flavor partners.

From the way they grow to the ways we enjoy them, this guide will help you understand why pairing coffee and chocolate is a palate pleaser and help you combine coffee with your favorite sweet treats at home. Let’s dive in!

Tropical Roots

The connection between coffee and chocolate begins long before either reaches a cup or wrapper. They are both products of tropical agriculture that depend on balanced ecosystems and sustainable farming practices. In Hawaii, our nutrient-rich volcanic soil, moderate elevation, and a steady rhythm of rain and sun create ideal conditions for both crops.

Due to our temperate conditions, Hawaii is the only state that grows coffee on a commercial scale and has several small-scale cacao producers offering farm-to-bar products. Much like different wine regions produce distinct wines, the growing conditions in Hawaii give our coffee unique flavors and characteristics shaped by the land. At Kauai Coffee, our beans reflect our unique microclimate, resulting in coffee with a range of natural flavor notes, from bright and citrusy to floral, earthy, and rich.

Coffee and Chocolate from Harvest to Hand

From harvest to roasting, coffee and chocolate follow parallel paths. After fruit is harvested from the trees, each undergoes a fermentation and drying process to remove the fruit and develop flavor in the seeds (beans). After drying, both coffee and chocolate seeds are roasted to unlock the flavors and aromas we recognize in the products we eat and drink.

Lighter roasts accentuate the fruity and floral notes of coffee, while longer, darker roasts emphasize cocoa, caramel, and nutty notes. Learning more about coffee roast levels will help you understand which coffees are most likely to please your palate.

Why Do Coffee and Chocolate Taste So Good Together?

Beyond their similar agriculture, processing, and roasting methods, coffee and chocolate share many of the same volatile chemical compounds that contribute to flavor and aroma, including pyrazines (nutty and roasty notes), aldehydes (malty notes), and furans (fruity and grassy notes). When we drink coffee and eat chocolate together, these compounds complement each other and enhance the richness of the flavors we experience.

Flavor Families and Pairing Principles

Now that you know what creates the different flavors and aromas we love in our coffee and chocolate, you can create pairings that complement or contrast one another. For example, pairing coffee and chocolate that both contain nutty notes elevates the roasted and nutty flavors. Contrasting pairs like coffee with bright or citrusy notes and dark, malty chocolate activate different areas of your palate, creating a more interesting flavor experience.

Our flavor guides can help you learn more and identify the flavor families you enjoy most.

Fruity and Malty

Kauai Blue Mountain has malt and fruit tones in the cup that complement milk chocolate with berries or chocolate-covered espresso beans.
