Where Does Coffee Get its Tropical Taste?

A tropical flavor typically refers to a flavor profile associated with fruits and ingredients commonly found in tropical regions. These flavors are often described as sweet, fruity, and sometimes tangy or tart and include flavors like banana, coconut, guava, mango, papaya, passionfruit, and pineapple.

In the context of coffee, tropical flavors can refer to the notes and undertones present in the coffee beans, which can be influenced by factors such as the soil, altitude, and climate in which the beans were grown. For example, Kauai Coffee grows in fertile volcanic soil. Little is known about why volcanic soil affects the flavor and characteristics of agricultural products grown in it, but just as grapes grown in volcanic soil produce distinct wine, the same is true for coffee. 

One reason may be the porous nature of volcanic soil, which allows water to wash over coffee roots relatively easily and quickly. Another could be the amount of iron oxide in the soil, which gives Kauai dirt its brilliant red hue and is an essential soil nutrient known to increase plant growth and yield.
