Dalgona Style Kauai Coffee Recipe
- 2 tablespoons concentrated Kauai Coffee, or one shot prepared with an espresso machine or Aeropress.
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional)
- 1 serving of milk or milk alternative
- To make a dalgona-style coffee with Kauai Coffee, first, you need to brew a very strong coffee. We were successful with a couple of methods but brewing with an espresso machine yielded the richest result. French Press and drip methods will also work but you will need to reduce the coffee further after brewing. For all of our tests, we used Kalaheo Estate Dark Roast. If you can brew with an espresso machine, skip to step three.
- If you brew with a French Press or drip method, prepare one strong cup and then make a coffee concentrate by simmering the coffee in a shallow saucepan over medium heat until it has reduced by half.
- Once your espresso shot or coffee concentrate is ready, combine two tablespoons of the hot brew with two tablespoons of granulated sugar and a pinch of cream of tartar in a large mixing bowl. Cream of tartar is a common baking ingredient and acts as a stabilizer in meringues and other whipped cream desserts.
- Now for the fun part – whip it! Use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or good old whisk to whip the coffee, sugar, and cream of tartar together. The more air you can whip into the sugar and coffee, the more light, fluffy, and luxurious your coffee foam will become. If you are using a whisk, be patient. Your coffee will get silky and frothy, but you may not get the same volume as a mechanical mixer. It will be delicious no matter which mixing method you use.
- Fill a clear glass with ice and pour in one serving of your favorite milk or milk alternative. Spoon the whipped coffee over the milk and sip to enjoy! Dalgona style coffee can be served over warm milk if you prefer your coffee hot.
VariationsThe fun thing about whipping up your own dalgona-style coffee with Kauai Coffee is the opportunity to experiment. Do you like mocha or chocolate in your coffee? Try whipping cocoa powder or chocolate hazelnut spread into your mixture. If you like a more caramel-y flavor in your coffee, try using brown sugar or coconut sugar instead of regular granulated sugar. Milk makes a fun variant as well. Try sweetened condensed or evaporated milk for a Thai or Vietnamese-inspired coffee treat.
Whipped Coffee Around the WorldWhile the popularity of dalgona coffee may have started in Korea, whipped coffee drinks are popular around the world. Here are a few other whipped coffees you might like to try at home. India: Phenti Hui (beaten coffee) – Whipped coffee in India is called Phenti Hui. It is very similar to the dalgona coffee, except the milk is poured over the coffee instead of the coffee topping the milk. Greece: Frappé – In Greece, instant coffee, sugar, and water are shaken in a cocktail shaker or whipped with a hand mixer to create a thick foam that is served over ice and water or condensed milk. Italy: Creamy Espresso slush – In a cocktail shaker, combine two shots of espresso, and two teaspoons of sugar. Pour half of the shaken espresso into a glass and combine the other half with whipped cream. Spoon the whipped cream mixture over the cold espresso in the glass and enjoy an Italian-style whipped coffee!
